How we can help
Latch and positioning
Latching difficulties and feeding discomfort can have several causes. Where appropriate, we observe feeding position and latch, explore comfortable positions for you and your baby, review your posture and any musculoskeletal discomfort, and identify when further lactation or medical assessment is needed.
Breast discomfort and breast care
We assess concerns such as engorgement and swelling, localised tenderness, nipple pain and nipple blebs (white spots), suspected mastitis, and discomfort when feeding or expressing. Care may include gentle breast-care techniques informed by Oketani training, and laser therapy may be discussed for selected concerns after assessment.
Understanding the whole picture
Breastfeeding difficulties rarely have a single cause. We consider your comfort, posture and movement; your baby's latch and feeding behaviour; feeding positions and routines; sleep and recovery; and stress and confidence.
Practical guidance for home
We cover comfortable feeding positions, latching strategies and gentle breast-care measures, and help you recognise changes that need professional assessment, including when to see an IBCLC, GP or other health professional.
Not every breast condition is suitable for hands-on care. Suspected infection, persistent symptoms or more serious concerns need timely assessment by a medical professional.
Prompt support when you need it
Breastfeeding problems can be stressful, especially when you are in pain or unsure how to feed your baby comfortably. We aim to offer prompt appointments whenever possible, including when you cannot see a lactation consultant quickly. You don't need to wait until a problem feels overwhelming to ask for help.
If you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, a fever with significant breast pain or redness, or feel seriously unwell, seek medical care promptly rather than waiting for an appointment.
Working with your care team
Breastfeeding support sometimes needs a team. Where appropriate, we work with or refer you to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), your GP, your midwife or maternity team, or paediatric and other health professionals.
Support at home
For families who find it hard to travel with a newborn, a home visit lets us discuss feeding positions, see your feeding setup and give practical guidance in your own environment.
Questions
Can I get help with latch problems?
Yes. Where appropriate, we can look at your baby's latch and feeding position and give practical guidance on positioning and comfort. If further assessment is needed, we can recommend an appropriate lactation professional.
Can you help with engorgement or a white spot on the nipple?
Yes. Dr. Jenny can assess your symptoms, discuss possible contributing factors and help decide the right next steps within her scope of practice. Engorgement and nipple white spots can have different causes, so understanding your symptoms and identifying anything that needs medical assessment comes first.
Support may include breastfeeding guidance, positioning advice and suitable comfort measures. Please do not try to puncture or remove a nipple spot yourself.
Do you provide support for mastitis?
If you have breast pain, redness, swelling or other signs of possible mastitis, the first step is to check whether you need urgent medical care. Timely medical advice is important, particularly if you have a fever, flu-like symptoms, worsening redness or increasing pain.
Dr. Jenny can provide breastfeeding support within her scope of practice and help coordinate next steps with your GP or midwife. Hands-on breast care should never delay necessary medical assessment or treatment.
What is the Oketani technique?
A breast-care technique used in breastfeeding support. Dr. Jenny has completed additional training in it. Whether any hands-on technique is appropriate depends on your symptoms and presentation.
What if I can't see a lactation consultant straight away?
Please contact us. Dr. Jenny will first seek to understand your symptoms and feeding situation, check for warning signs that need prompt medical attention, and help you with the next steps. That may be an appointment with her, or referral to your GP, midwife, IBCLC or another health professional.
Can I book a breastfeeding home visit?
Yes. Home visits are available in Newmarket and on the North Shore, and in other Auckland areas by arrangement, subject to availability and travel fees.
