Postpartum chiropractic care
Supporting your recovery after birth in Auckland, including back and pelvic pain, diastasis recti and pelvic floor guidance, while you care for your baby.
Birth brings significant physical changes, and your body continues to adapt in the weeks and months that follow. Dr. Jenny Jang takes an individualised approach to postpartum care, considering spinal and pelvic function, movement, muscular support and the physical demands of looking after a baby.
The goal is to help you move more comfortably and support your recovery through appropriate chiropractic care, rehabilitation and practical guidance for home.
Common concerns we discuss
- Lower back and pelvic discomfort
- Tailbone discomfort
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Wrist and hand pain from lifting and feeding
- Hip and knee discomfort
- Posture and movement challenges
The right approach depends on your symptoms, birth history, stage of recovery and assessment.
Our approach
Spinal and pelvic assessment
We assess alignment, joint movement and mobility to understand what may be contributing to your discomfort, and build chiropractic care and movement guidance into an individual plan where appropriate.
Pelvic floor and diastasis recti
Recovery involves more than spinal and pelvic care. We include rehabilitation guidance for pelvic floor function, abdominal wall recovery and diastasis recti, and work with a pelvic health physiotherapist or GP when needed.
Practical recovery for everyday life
We look at how feeding positions, lifting and carrying your baby, resting positions and returning to exercise affect your recovery, and help you build strategies that fit your day.
Your recovery is individual
There is no single timeline that suits every mother. If your symptoms suggest a condition needing further investigation or specialised care, we will recommend appropriate assessment or referral.
Optional heat dome care
For mothers who would like extra warmth and relaxation during recovery, an optional heat dome session can be added to suitable postpartum appointments.
- Soothing warmth during a time of physical and emotional adjustment
- May temporarily ease feelings of muscle tightness and stiffness
- Dedicated time to rest as part of your recovery
- Complements individualised movement guidance and postpartum care
Before using the heat dome, we consider your delivery and recovery, current symptoms, skin sensation and tolerance of heat. Please let us know if you have had a Caesarean birth, have an unhealed wound, or are experiencing unusual bleeding, fever or significant pain. Medical assessment may be needed first.
Heat dome care is a comfort measure, not a treatment for inflammation, infection, significant swelling or other medical conditions. It is optional, carries an additional fee and should not replace medical advice or recommended postpartum care.
Questions
When can I see a chiropractor after giving birth?
It depends on your birth experience, recovery, symptoms and health. We discuss your history and assess whether care is suitable. After a complicated birth or surgery, you may need guidance from your maternity care team first.
Can postpartum chiropractic care help with back and pelvic discomfort?
Chiropractic care may help some people manage certain musculoskeletal symptoms. We assess your individual presentation and discuss suitable options, including rehabilitation and referral when appropriate. Results vary between individuals.
Do you provide diastasis recti and pelvic floor support?
We can discuss abdominal wall function, diastasis recti and appropriate movement guidance after birth. Pelvic floor symptoms or more complex rehabilitation needs may require assessment by a pelvic health physiotherapist or another qualified professional.
Is the heat dome included in my appointment?
No. It is an optional additional service, subject to suitability and availability. Please ask about the current fee and mention any health concerns when booking.
Can Dr. Jenny help with urinary leakage after childbirth?
Urinary leakage after childbirth can be linked to changes in pelvic floor function, and it can occur alongside diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles).
Dr. Jenny can assess your symptoms and abdominal wall function, provide appropriate postpartum movement guidance, and refer you to a pelvic health physiotherapist when needed. With appropriate assessment and individualised care, symptoms may improve.
Do you offer home visits for new mothers?
Yes, in Newmarket and on the North Shore, and in other Auckland areas by arrangement, subject to availability and travel fees. See home visits.
